Glamour.com is celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the magazine with a photo collection of American icons — which made me want to poke around for affordable pieces that echo these looks.
1) Alexis Bledel as Rose the Riveter
Rosie the Riveter is straight up 1940s… when women started challenging convention and wearing clothes with a menswear-ish vibe. I think the perfect modern day interpretation of this look might be this denim shirt.
2) Hayden Panettiere as Amelia Earhart
Like Rosie, Amelia Earhart was another strong female icon — who could carry off a badass brown leather jacket and still look feminine and girly. She taught women they could fly … literally and figuratively.
3) Alicia Keys as Michelle Obama
Since she’s stepped onto the scene, the Jackie O comparisons have been nonstop for Micelle Obama. I see her perfectly at home in this navy J. Crew cardigan that is literally named “the Jackie cardigan.”
4) Camilla Belle as Mary Tyler Moore
I love that this is fun and carefree, yet completely elegant and chic. Mary Tyler Moore perfectly straddled the line between 60s and 70s — much like this tweed coat from Modcloth.
5) Emma Roberts as Audrey Hepburn
Audrey Hepburn might just be one of my all time favorite personal style icons. She championed one of my favorite looks — cropped skinny pants with ballet flats — and this pair from Banana Republic is right on point.
After doing some digging, I see that it’s definitely possible to find pieces that remind us of our favorite fashion icons … you just have to be willing to do some “research” 🙂
