On Wednesday, I attended an event by Aloxxi and People Stylewatch at the Stephen Knoll Salon in New York City. The event featured color consultations and we were treated to dry styling. It was super educational and I wanted to share some of the great tips I learned with y’all.
First, I sat down with a color expert from the salon named Julio, and we had a great conversation abut all things hair color. He told me that for those of us looking to experiment with a new hair color, there are things we need to consider:
- Skin tone. You don’t want to go with a color that’s too close to your skin tone … it will make you look washed out.
- Natural hair color and texture. For most of us, we shouldn’t change our color too drastically … especially when that means having to bleach it or lighten it too much. Also – your hair’s texture could determine how it takes color, and how saturated the color will be.
- Eye color. You want to make sure your new hair color is going to compliment your natural eye color, too.
He also told me something that kind of shocked me, and that I am totally guilty of: you know those pictures you tear out of magazines and print out from Pinterest of exactly the hair color or cut you want? That actually makes it harder for your hair stylist. There are so many factors that play into those photos. The lighting or shadow in those photos could be impossible to replicate. The texture of the hair you’re trying to copy may not work for your hair type. And let’s be honest – how many times has it come out exactly like the picture. Give yourself and your hair stylist a break and just talk with them.
Next, it was time for me to be treated to a dry styling with Jenny, one of their hair stylists. She took my ratty two-day hair and gave me a gorgeous wavy bob!

Both Jenny and Aloxxi expert Bob Siebert also gave me some really great pointers while she was refreshing my hairdo.
- Don’t dry your hair too much in the summer. Give your hair a break from the heat of the blowdryer, if you can… it’s the one time of year you can get away with it!
- Apply a thermal protectant spray before you use any kind of heat on your hair. Whether it’s a curling iron, straightening iron or dryer – protecting your hair from the heat is so important. If you don’t, you’re basically burning your hair.
- Texturizing spray is a must have. It creates those beachy, piecey waves that everyone loves, and gives you some nice volume at the roots. Hint: Aloxxi’s texturizing spray does not contain salt, unlike most of the texturizing sprays out there. Putting salt on your strands can affect your color and totally dry out your hair. PS- their texturizing spray also gives soft hold and helps maintain a glossy shine.
I hope these tips help you the next time you’re sitting down in the salon chair or styling your locks in this heat!
