Tonight marks the beginning of the end for my all-time favorite show on television … Mad Men. I’m certainly sad about it, but I know deep down that the show about the world of advertising in the 1960s had to end sometime. After all, the decade had to end sometime.
One of the biggest things I will miss about sitting down on Sunday nights during each season is the fashion. Janie Bryant is an absolute costume design GENIUS. She has shown us so many striking and unforgettable looks over the seven seasons of the show, each of them with a meaning and a purpose.
I found it nearly impossible to narrow it down to my top 10 favorite looks from the show over the years, but here goes:
1. Joan’s classic blue dress … with the bow, the brooch, the pen necklace and the hint of sass, this is probably my favorite of all of Joan’s outfits over the years …
2. Joan’s ruffles … and this might be my second favorite. That neckline though …
3. Betty’s white lace dress … Betty wore this when she was very pregnant with Gene. No matter what, Betty was always going to go all-out glam when it came to parties held by Don’s coworkers.
4. Betty’s Grace-Kelly-goes-horseback-riding ensemble … could she possibly look anymore classy?!
5. Joan’s casual wear … we so rarely saw her dress like this, so when she did it was a real treat.
6. The lawnmower dress … Joan wore this green dress that fateful day when the whole lawnmower incident happened at the Sterling Cooper offices, leaving her covered in blood but still looking so damn chic.
7. Sally’s first date outfit … she wears this outfit when she goes to the museum with Glen, and I when I first saw it, distinctly remember saying that I wish it came in my size.
8. Megan’s casual wear … Megan was another character that at first was always dolled up. But as we got to know the real Megan, we slowly got to see her in more casual pieces like this plaid look.
9. Joan’s meltdown dress … Joan famously freaks out on the office receptionist while wearing this dress, and yet she still looks amazingly glam while doing it.
10. Betty the housewife … Betty *almost* always looked absolutely immaculate, even when she was just standing in her kitchen. This look is probably one of my favorites.
